The right barcode scanner for a warehouse comes down to a handful of practical questions: what you're scanning, how far away, corded or mobile, how rugged your floor is, and what it plugs into.
Start with what you're scanning
Linear (1D) barcodes on flat, well-lit labels: a laser scanner is the simpler, lower-cost choice. QR codes, Data Matrix, shipping labels, ID cards, or damaged/curved labels: you need a 2D imager. See our 1D vs 2D guide.
Scan range
Standard-range covers typical picking and receiving distances. Scanning pallets on high racking or reading labels several feet away needs a long-range or extended-range model — usually called out in the model name.
Corded, cordless, or fixed-mount
Corded is simplest and cheapest for stationary workstations. Cordless (Bluetooth) adds mobility around a station. Fixed-mount bolts onto a conveyor for hands-free, high-throughput scanning.
Ruggedness rating
Check the IP rating and drop-spec against your actual environment. A warehouse floor with regular drops onto concrete needs a higher drop-spec than a clean retail counter.
Connectivity
Confirm the scanner supports your host connection: USB, Bluetooth, or a mobile computer's software stack. Standardizing across a fleet? Matching profiles saves real IT setup time.
New vs. used
