1D scanners read simple linear barcodes with a laser line. 2D imaging scanners use a camera sensor instead, so they read everything a 1D scanner does plus QR codes, Data Matrix codes, and damaged or low-contrast labels. Here's when each one is the right call.
The short answer
If you only ever scan simple linear barcodes in good lighting, a 1D scanner is cheaper and reliable. If you handle QR codes, ID/shipping labels, damaged or low-contrast labels, or curved/wrapped packaging, a 2D imager is worth the extra cost.
Where each one holds up
Laser scanners
Well suited to point-of-sale and simple linear-barcode-only environments where labels are flat, clean, and well lit. Generally the lower-cost option and easy to deploy at scale.
Imaging scanners
Handle everything 1D does, plus QR codes, Data Matrix (electronics, pharma), PDF417 (licenses, shipping labels), and phone-screen codes. Read damaged, dirty, curved, or low-contrast barcodes more reliably by capturing a full image. Warehousing, logistics, healthcare, and field service increasingly standardize on 2D for this flexibility.
If you're not sure which you need, choose 2D. It reads everything a 1D scanner reads plus the formats 1D can't, for a modest cost difference.
Fixed-mount vs handheld
