Most barcode scanners work with most software out of the box because they emulate a keyboard — but a few real compatibility questions matter before you roll out hardware against a warehouse management system (WMS), SAP, Odoo, or a POS platform.
Keyboard wedge (HID) vs. serial vs. SDK
Most scanners default to keyboard-wedge (HID) mode, typing scanned data wherever the cursor is focused — this works with almost any software, including SAP GUI and most WMS web interfaces, with zero integration work. Some deployments instead use a vendor SDK for tighter control (auto-tab between fields, data validation); check whether your WMS or custom app expects this.
Symbology support
Confirm the scanner reads every barcode symbology your system actually uses — Code 128 and Code 39 are near-universal, but GS1-128, Data Matrix, or QR codes require a 2D imager, not a 1D laser scanner.
Mobile computer vs. corded scanner for WMS work
A full rugged mobile computer running a WMS client app (native or browser-based) supports real-time, two-way data (confirmations, quantity prompts, error messages) — a simple corded scanner just injects text and can't. If your WMS has a mobile workflow, you likely need a mobile computer, not just a scanner.
Fixed-mount / hands-free scanning
For conveyor lines or high-throughput packing stations, a fixed-mount or hybrid hands-free scanner (like Zebra's DS9908) frees up workers' hands entirely instead of requiring a handheld trigger-pull per item.
Before buying at scale, test one unit against your actual WMS/SAP/POS login screen and a real transaction — keyboard-wedge scanners are compatible with nearly everything, but field/tab behavior can vary by application.
