Integrated scan engines
Rugged mobile computers ship with a dedicated laser or imaging scan engine, purpose-tuned for fast, accurate reads all day. A phone camera used as a scanner is generally slower and less reliable at scale.
Long-cycle support & parts
Enterprise device makers support a model for years, with predictable firmware and available parts. Consumer phones cycle out every year or two, and industrial accessory support fades fast.
Hot-swappable batteries
Most rugged mobile computers use a swappable battery, so a worker keeps a device running through a full shift by swapping batteries instead of stopping to charge. Phones generally can't do this.
Drop, dust & temperature ratings
Rugged devices are rated (IP54/65/67/68, MIL-STD-810 drop testing, operating temperature ranges) for the specific abuse of a warehouse, dock, or outdoor environment.
For occasional, light scanning, a phone with a case can work. For all-day, high-volume scanning in a warehouse or field environment, a rugged device pays for itself.
