A rugged (or "ruggedized") mobile computer is a handheld or wearable device built to survive drops, dust, moisture, and all-day industrial use while running a real operating system and an integrated barcode scanner. Here's how to pick the right one.
Form factor
Handheld touch computers (like Zebra's TC-series) suit most picking, receiving, and counter work. Wearable/ring scanners free up the hands for two-handed tasks. Vehicle-mount computers serve forklifts and tow motors.
Touch-only vs. keypad
Touch-only devices are lighter and cheaper. Keypad models add physical numeric/function keys, useful for gloved hands or heavy data-entry workflows where touch alone is slower.
WLAN-only vs. WWAN (cellular)
WLAN-only models connect to your own WiFi and cost less — fine for use strictly inside a warehouse or store. WWAN models add cellular data and GPS for field service, delivery, or multi-site work where WiFi isn't guaranteed.
Battery & hot-swap
Look for a hot-swappable battery if the device runs multi-shift operations — workers can swap a battery in seconds without powering down. Fixed-battery devices are simpler but need scheduled charging downtime.
Operating system & support window
Nearly all current rugged mobile computers run Android. Check how many years of OS security updates the manufacturer commits to — this affects how long the device stays deployable under most corporate IT policies.
Ruggedness rating
IP65/IP68 ratings cover dust and water resistance; drop-spec (e.g., rated for repeated drops to concrete from a stated height) covers physical durability. Match both to your actual environment, not just the shelf spec.
If your team already carries a fleet of one brand, staying in-family (even a newer model) usually saves the most on accessories, cradles, and IT configuration compared to switching brands for a marginal spec improvement.
